]]>More than 250 design luminaries gathered at theMART in Chicago Sunday night for Interior Design’s ninth annual HiP Awards ceremony, marking the start of NeoCon. As the night got underway, the well-heeled group of designers, creatives, and manufacturers mingled with cocktails in hand—most after a two-year hiatus—before snagging a seat on the steps at Marshall’s Landing for the ceremony.
As editor in chief Cindy Allen took to the stage, the crowd offered a communal cheer, setting a celebratory tone for the evening. “Are you happy?” Allen asked, speaking above the hum of applause. “Because I’m so happy to be here!” Then she unveiled one winner after the next.
This year’s Product winners reflect an extensive range of industry talent, from carpeting that draws on hypnotic desert hues to a sleek outdoor shower that fits in just about anywhere, highlighting the importance of sustainability and innovation. As for HiP People winners, Allen offered ceremony attendees a glimpse into the narratives that shaped their distinguished careers—noting that each story is nothing short of impressive. “I’m honored to be recognized for sustainability efforts,” says HiP Rising Star for Sustainability Jane Hallinan, interior design at Perkins Eastman. “Material health is so important and I hope to continue encouraging others to prioritize specifying for the environment.”
Spirits remained high throughout the evening as attendees embraced the opportunity to catch up with friends and colleagues, including a few in town from overseas. “It’s so great to be back at NeoCon, there’s a whole new energy,” says HiP Rising Star Madison George, interior designer at Huntsman Architectural Group. “It feels different and really fresh.”
“It’s surreal,” adds HiP Hospitality Leader Dan Mazzarini, principal and creative director of BHDM Design. “NeoCon and these awards feel like the celebration that is our industry—they’re so emblematic.” We couldn’t have said it better ourselves.
Take a look at the winner’s gallery and catch a glimpse of event highlights below.
The HiP Awards ceremony also was live-streamed on DesignTV by SANDOW. In case you missed it, be sure to check out the replay here.

]]>The enduring International Design Competition is in its 49th year. The annual event, hosted by the International Interior Design Association, honors innovation in the design, architecture, and furnishing of interior spaces. Its counterpart, the Will Ching Design Competition, in its 30th year, celebrates excellence in commercial interiors by firms composed of five or fewer employees. This year’s submissions were judged for their suitability and originality—with special attention paid to how finishes and furnishings are integrated—by a jury consisting of Shimoda Design group partner Susan Chang, Interactive Design Architects president Dina Griffin, and Studio Munge founder and design director Alessandro Munge.
Two of the awardees they selected have appeared in the pages of Interior Design: LSM’s Paul Hastings office in Washington on page 144 of this issue is the Large Corporate Space winner, and the Audrey Irmas Pavilion in Los Angeles by OMA and Gruen Associates featured in our April issue won for Public Spaces & Commercial Lobbies. The jury’s other picks are Prefix Design’s own office in Chengdu and One Plus Partnership’s Cinesky Cinema in Shenzhen, both in China; a Napa Valley, California, residence by Aidlin Darling Design; and Genesis House in New York by Suh Architects and HLW; Stüdyo AB’s Cocoon Istanbul takes home the Will Ching Award. All are toasted—and the Best in Competition winner revealed—at the IIDA’s black-tie Revel in Design gala in Chicago on June 12, the kickoff to the annual NeoCon trade fair.

]]>The post This Year’s Winners of Le French Design 100 Reflect the Evolving Landscape of Design appeared first on Interior Design.
]]>In and beyond the city of lights, France continues to shine a spotlight on design with the second edition of Le French Design 100. The digital festival, which honors the global reach of French designers, kicked off January 20 with an opening ceremony held at the Elysée Palace and runs through February 21.
Similar to the first edition of the event, held in 2019 at the Musée des Arts Decoratifs Paris, jury members selected 100 product and project winners, that showcase the breadth and diversity of the country’s design traditions and values, such as the art of living, creativity, and sustainable innovation.
“French spirit is based on rigor and critical thinking. We value quality, truth, and creativity, a both intoxicating and positive combination. How can French design be exported to the world?” Philippe Starck, guest of honor at the festival, notes in a statement. “Two parameters should be respected: that designers, authors and creators remember their social, humanist and ecological role and that they forget the ultra-fast cycle of fashion. Today, we must return to the true values of a profession, provide a real service. We are in an extremely good position because of what we are, but also because of what we can become if we make a little effort,” he continues.
The jury, led by president Hervé Lemoine, director of Mobilier National, includes international experts such as Deyan Sudjic, director emeritus of the Design Museum in London, Jennifer Flay, creative director of FIAC, Paris, Leila Anna Wahba, director and head curator of the Architecture + Design Museum, Los Angeles, Dakota Jackson, designer and founder of House of Dakota Jackson, New York, and Miryon Ko, arts and culture director of Cartier, Japan. This year’s digital edition, supported by president Emmanuel Macron, features exclusive videos and an interactive Le French Design World Map enabling viewers to measure the place and impact of French design on a global scale.
